Beta Phase
(2012-2013)

FROM CONCEPT TO CONTENT

January 4, 2012 - Filming begins as host Josh Bernstein and his team establish the foundation for Explorer At Large's approach to episodic, educational content. Throughout 2012 and 2013, Josh films with experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science on a variety of STEAM topics and STEAM-related career paths. In all, 10 episodes are filmed in Florida, Massachusetts, California, and Cuba, on topics ranging from aquifer water quality to coral conservation strategies to shark migration patterns.

CONCLUSION: In executing the Beta Phase, Explorer At Large  learns how to best approach the challenges of creating short (5-minute) videos that are both educational and entertaining.

NEXT STEP: Work with a scientific institution to determine if a series of videos can fulfill the needs of formal education (and educators) by grounding the content in curricula from Common Core or Next Generation Science Standards.
